Very dangerous if like me you haven't yet got all the skills and experience needed... but hey since when did that stop New Zealanders climbing mountains! Jones and Dingle when they first went to Europe, in a single season climbed all the major North Faces 'knocking off' the killer Eiger in 14 hours bottom to top... ReplyDeleteNow the intellectual style that emerges throught the seven blogs (Acessed through profile at the side-Ed)-Is that of a brain damage person. At about age 2 meangetis broke up my brain up so that I can and do work out of the two different sides of the brain to produce almost two different (Reflected in our comments-Ed) styles. And you can see in my typos how one hand is getting ahead of the other, or if I am reading Hebrew or Arabic which is read Right to Left and then go to English which is read Left to Right I am confused as to what direction to read. Or I can write everything backwards using the right hand- (when I write using mostly the left hand-) so that you can read it in a mirror! AHHHH!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteAll that put me, with intellegent potential 10 years behind in my schooling, so I had finaly got up to being able to write university essay level by 25 and doctorate level stuff coming a decade or so after that. Interesting as I watch my own children coming through in their eductaion only a decade behind me, as they come up to doing Doctorate level research. But the great advantage of this brain damage-divine wounding (The sermon you preach on that is Jacob Limped) is that I have been able to do super boring brain dead working class jobs since leaving school while gradually catching up and perhaps by the end surpassing those who did not have the limitations i have been blessed with. And potentially we as a family can work toegther in our areas of research and get advantage from a team effort.
So trust me- if these efforts at translation have as many mistakes as I suspect I will begin to see coming back to look in a few years time; Things are rapidly getting better as God is at work putting together the brain connections needed to do this task well.
And the other side of me honestly couldn't care how badly I am doing while the Left side of me digs to find the most exact transaltion of some serioulsy obscure used once in the bible concept! If you ask me how I translate; Well it is just the same as writing poetry- I feel the words; feel the emotion or the burden- hence I am comming up with everyday expressions- the best way of getting the feel of what the Greek word is saying.
ReplyDeleteAs to knowing what the Greek word is saying- I go for spread. So there is a range of meanings that this word has carried in 400 years of Greek usage from before the NT and after up until St Jerome. And from that spread of meaning i am looking for the most basic, most simple, least complex, primary (Do you mean -one? -Ed) idea. And then i feel that emotion of that word and from a number of different languages work out how it is going to be expressed. Then as well I check that word against the range of usage in the Bible itself. No good coming up with a word that doesn't fit the range of Biblical usage. So in Peter I have let you see the range of usage that is ocrurring just in the book of Peter let alone the entire Bible of the word 'cosmos' A word I have felt in Islam where the Arabic word is Dunia- Hence I alerted readers to Peters coded final line reference to the Church in Babylon; As it relates to the usage of the word in his letters-Cosmos. And the existing meaning on that word and the new meaning he is bringing with his letter.
Another word success that has come in the past weeks is 'chasing after' that word first turning up in Romans with the idea of Persecution but then turning up again in Romans and in Peter in terms of hospita;ity to strangers which is a very very important hall mark of the New Testament church. In fact in St James we will see it is the make or break test of whether or not our religion is worth anything. So the one word in Greek is used in two ways which in English are not at all related. But with God's help i finally hit on 'chasing after' to satisfy annoying new people coming to us- often sent by God- and people we don't like and would chase away.

Peter vs Paul disputes.
ReplyDeleteOnce upon a time my Islamic elder Sheik Nori of Lybia sat me down to debate what he had been learning from the Wahabist (Kafir- in that he does not believe the Bible is true as written) Evangelist,the now dead South Africa Ahmed Dedat. And came up with the line that St Paul had created a new religion and quoted a verse to support that which I was able to tell him came from St John who is seen as being on the other side of that supposed divide.
These four books completed here then give us a platform to look at the genuine differences between the Two Bishops of Rome St Peter and St Paul mindful that they did really have a heated debate over the question of eating pork, and here we have Peter saying that St Paul's letters are hard to understand and liable to be misinterpted- A view which you can see by how difficult I found to give you a word for word translation of what is there in the text- which makes some sort of sence (Maybe next time-Ed)
